Today, NIO unveiled an impressive new electric vehicle, the NIO ET7, with a massive battery pack and the potential to be fully autonomous.

NIO is a Chinese electric car company that has grown rapidly over the past few years.

Often dubbed the “Tesla of China,” the electric vehicle company has successfully sold some electric SUVs in the growing Chinese market.

Ultimately, the company plans to expand outside of China.

NIO ET7 electric sedan

On NIO Day 2020 in Chengdu today, NIO unveiled its next electric vehicle: NIO ET7.

It’s an electric sedan with an impressive engine.

The ET7 is equipped with a 480 kW twin motor and is driven by a battery that can reach 150 kWh.

NIO describes the ET7 electric powertrain:

“ET7 inherited NIO’s high-performance DNA with a 180 kW permanent magnet motor at the front and a 300 kW induction motor at the rear. Maximum power is rated at 480 kW with maximum torque at 850 Nm. ET7 accelerates from 0 to 100 kW. Km / h in 3.9 seconds, and it has a braking distance of 100 km / h 33.5 meters.With a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd and the application of the second generation of high-efficiency electric drive platform with silicon carbide power unit, the energy efficiency is further improved. With the 70K battery pack “The ET7 has a NEDC range of over 500 km, or more than 700 km with a 100 kWh battery. When combined with the new 150 kWh battery, the ET7 boasts a NEDC range of over 1,000 km.”

The 1,000 km (621 miles) range number is based on the NEDC cycle, which is rarely representative of real-world driving.

However, with a power capacity of 150 kWh and an efficient looking design, the ET7 is likely to get more than 500 miles of range on a single charge.

Aside from the powertrain, the ET7 is also impressive for its all-around autonomous drivetrain.

NIO says the electric vehicle comes with 33 sensors and 4 Nvidia Orin chips:

“ NIO has built full-stack NAD autonomous driving capability including perception, localization, control strategy, and platform software algorithms. NIO Aquila Super Sensing features 33 high-performance sensors, including 11 8-megapixel HD cameras, and 1 Long Range High Resolution LiDAR, 5mm Radars, 12 Ultrasound Sensors, 2 HD Positioning Modules, V2X and ADMS Aquila can generate 8GB of data per second. NIO Adam features 4 Nvidia Orin SoCs with total power Computing of 1016 TOPS. “

The company was able to accurately integrate these several sensors without affecting the design too much:

ET7’s price starts at CNY 448,000 (~ $ 69,000) before EV incentives and will also be offered under NIO’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, which comes with a cheaper and monthly cost of a battery pack.

Moreover, the NIO takes a Tesla-like approach when it comes to autonomous driving capabilities.

It will provide safety features enabled by their autonomous driving technology as standard, but will charge a fee for autonomous driving features, which will be offered as a subscription.

Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022.
