Five years after an Ivy League alumnus who was vacationing in New Orleans in the French Quarter was murdered, his death remains unsolved. “It feels like forever and feels like yesterday,” said Karen Woodruff, mother of Josh, who was killed in Crescent City. “Time kinda stops. It’s hard to believe.” Woodruff said her world was shattered five years ago. “We think about it,” Karen said. “There’s a sure feeling that it never disappears.” As 2015 turns into 2016, the city is partying, and Josh Woodruff is here enjoying himself. After three o’clock in the morning on New Year’s Day 2016, his life ended tragically. Woodruff’s car collided while he was waiting for an Uber at the intersection of Domaine and Decatur Streets in the French Quarter. His body was towed by car the 6 miles to the Westbank Expressway. It’s a crime that has left his family distraught in Omaha, Nebraska. “The sadness will never go away,” Karen said. “There is nothing anyone can do to bring Josh back unfortunately.” After the death, NOPD began an investigation. A vehicle believed to be involved is seen in the video, but the make and model are unclear. Soon the case turned cold. “The fact that there is no justice is like rubbing a wound with salt,” Karen said. NOPD moved the case from pass to murder, but again, nothing. This frustrated the Woodruff family. “I think things would have been completely different if the killing happened from day one,” Karen said. She does not believe that the police handled the case properly. Karen said, “You can level up and get things done.” “There’s no reason why this hasn’t been resolved in years.” Police say the case is still under investigation, but have not released any other information. Josh was a Harvard graduate who worked in California and was on vacation in New Orleans at the time of his death. His parents hope this case will lead to action. “We still pray that someone’s conscience will force them to give information,” Karen said. “I think there is a lot of strength in the conscience.” Crimestoppers offers an enhanced bonus for any information in the case.
